The 3 Reasons to Have a Web Site

1.  To Make Money

These sites are designed to transact business directly on the web.  They include but are not limited to eCommerce sites and sites that allow you to order via email.  The upshot is that they are set up to part the visitor from their money directly.

2.  To Advertise

I generally find myself selling and building these kinds of sites for my clients.  The concept is to develop a site that encourages the viewer to get up from behind the computer screen and actually visit the business (and part with some hard earned cash!).  This site is ideal for the Online Yellow Pages with its Door-to-door Directions and mapping functions:  It makes it extremely easy for a potential customer to find a particular business location.

I see sights that are espousing a particular point of view falling into this category as well.

3.  Because Itīs Cool!

Now, this isnīt as pretentious as it sounds!  Image is an important consideration in the business world.  Having a web site says something about you and not having a web site says something about you.  It encompasses such concepts as credibility, forward thinking and status.  It also can be a desperate cry for attention!

The reality is that sites generally have elements of all three.  Certainly a site that is conducting eCommerce is also advertising its products and services.  Likewise, a site that is hoping to save the rare, Australian emu is certainly advertising for attention and may even accept a donation or two.
